General Advice concerning Scholarships
Be creative when looking for scholarships. Don't focus too much on a particular purpose for which you are looking for this scholarship. Consider if you may be eligible for scholarships for other reasons than the one you primarily need the money for. If you are intending to study a certain major in a certain country you should, of course, look for such scholarships but you should also look for others you qualify for. It can be scholarships for people from your town or for former students of a school you have attended.
Start looking for scholarships well in advance. It is a good idea to start looking around for scholarships at least one year before you need the money. If you don't manage to get started that early you should still be able to find pretty much with half a year's foresight. Check the application procedure with the Administrator of the scholarship. Sometimes applications are to be submitted through the web and sometimes per post. In some cases special pre-defined forms need to be used and sometimes you can write freely. Write a personalized application - please be inspired by others or by examples and templates but make sure you make it your own. It is always important to point out why you need the scholarship and why you can make good use of the money. Point out the importance of your studies or project and how it relates to the goals associated with the scholarship. Emphasize your qualifications and stick to facts to make the application interesting and successful.
Don't forget to send references and annexes such as testimonials and grades if this is asked for. To be eligible for certain scholarships you need to verify that you have limited means. If you ask for a recommendation letter from a teacher or employer they sometimes ask you to formulate the letter yourself. If this happens then don't be shy to promote yourself. Sometimes you are required to submit a budget together with your scholarship application. If you do submit a budget make sure that it is realistic and easy to understand.
